Possess Good Moral Character
While at SUNY Cortland prior to student teaching, students are eligible to student teach based off of whether our background passes ethics and morality principles. For example, we are required to get fingerprinted, which would obviously find any trace of criminal issues if one were to be hiding them. In addition, we are required to take the CARR and SAVE workshops which regard child safety and prevention of child abuse. Because I took these workshops I now am more aware of the unfortunate things that may happen to children and I know how to assess these situations.
While student teaching, we are evaluated not only on our method of teaching, but also our professional dispositions. Attached is a sample rubric in which I am rated on.

As one may see, professional dispositions is very important to my school, and to me as well. Developing a positive character with your students is very important because if they see that you are a good person, hopefully they will be also. This also helps in positive classroom environment, which fosters learning. The aspects listed on the rubric are no brain-ers to me. Obviously I need to be reliable, receptive, organized, honest, and punctual. Also, as a teacher I know that I need to respect diversity, be reflective, and meet varied learning styles. Things such as those are natural to me and are crucial to developing into a successful teacher.
Another part of having a good moral character is respecting all students and anyone else you come into contact with no matter their nationality, heritage, socioeconomic background, etc. Building a good rapport with your students is crucial because when they care about you they will respect you. In addition, you must respect your students. Being a teacher is about having a partnership with your students, not being in control of them. By incorporating diversity into your lessons or texts that you choose to read, you will have a better chance with connecting with a bigger range of students.
